When an individual does not respond to the above treatments, the last resort would be ti used electroconvulsive therapy. Electroconvulsive therapy or ECT works by electrically inducing seizures for therapeutic effects. This is done only when all other treatments are not serving. This treatment is very immediate and effective and is very helpful in situation such as catatonic depression where in the patient is failing to take any kinds of food which can ultimately result to death. It is also very helpful in situation where suicide is seen as hope to come out from a depression. When situations are on a helpless mode, that is the only time that ECT is used since it’s effects are not yet fully studied.
The above discussed treatments are only a part of depression treatments. There are also alternative means of treating depression. Parts of these alternative treatments are acupuncture, exercise, and music therapy. Acupuncture helps in aiding people with depression by its capability to make the body produce high level of endorphins which gives the body a feeling of well-being. Exercise functions by producing physiological effects that help counter depression. It is also helpful in reducing stress which can be a factor for depression. And finally, music therapy helps by the ability of music to provoke different set of moods. Studies have shown that there are certain areas in the brain particularly the sub-cortical centers that are reached by music. This helps depression by breaking off unhealthy emotions.
