Treating Addiction By Eliminating Drug-associated Memories

Addicts, even those who have been abstinent for long periods of time, are often still vulnerable to their own memories of prior drug use. For example, exposure to the same environment in which they commonly used drugs — a contextual memory — can increase their craving for the drug dramatically and can lead to relapse. Continue reading

Resolved Question: Leave my shaky marriage for another woman?

I’ve been married for almost 6 years. My wife, unfortunately, cheated early in the marriage. She messed with cocaine and got around with plenty of men in the process. I helped her clean up and pull through the addiction, only to find out about the infidelity later. I was pretty devastated, and spent alot of time trying to make sense of it. I couldn’t and I wanted out of the marriage. My moral and godly upright citizen family argued hard and eventually convinced me, feeble minded fool that I am, that forgivness was the way, and that the divorce would bring more pain financially. That was the 3 year mark. I tried to make it all work out. I’d never cheated before, and had never been in a situation like this. I eventually slept with a few girls trying to….maybe make things even or something. Epic Fail. Sex dwindled off at 4 years, by 5 we had gone back to the beginning as more friends with history than anything. An evening out to a TOOL concert sparked the love life just enough to deliver us our beautiful daughter who is 1 1/2.
Most of this time, 3 years almost, i’ve know and had a crush on this other woman named Judy, somewhat a friend of my wife. well she now becomes our babysitter, my wife’s decision, and I found out Judy felt the same way about me. So she and i have talked and spent time together(non sexually) for a long time. She was 16 when we met, I was 23 so we never did anything BUT hangout. Well she grew up, now 18 and im 26, and recently we, by some crazy train of events, spent 3 weeks practically living together.
I care about my wife, she is my oldest friend. She and I now sit in a very unstable, un-satisfied position. She knows i’m unhappy, we’ve had many arguments about the cheating. We sleep in different beds. We’re never intimate. I have no idea why I stayed so long after, now we have a daughter.
I can’t get Judy out of my mind, she clouds every thought. I’ve been so unhappy for so long, I had forgotten and ignored it, and buried myself in video games to get away. Judy absolutely destroyed what was left of the relationship between my wife and I. She wants to move out with me, and i’ve never wanted anything more than that. Admittedly, things with Judy, in my mind, just don’t seem likely to succeed even though I am more in love with her than i ever felt for my wife. I’m falling apart compltetly. It seems too shaky. Am I as dumb as I think I am?

Resolved Question: A few questions in honor of Layne Staley being found dead today 7 years ago and weed day…?

Layne Staley of Alice in Chains was found dead today 7 years ago in his Seattle apartment. The death was presumed to be the result of a speed ball (heroin and cocaine) overdose. The dark lyrics of Alice In Chains songs, particularly those on their album dirt, dealt with drug addiction. Layne was one of the most powerful vocalists of the “grunge” movement (although The band considers themselves to play heavy metal). Layne also made metal vocals, something normally not considered to be very soulful, beautiful.

On a lighter and less addictive note, today is also weed day. (4/20)

So what is your favorite song about drugs? (not to glorify them or anything but many great songs are about drugs)

BQ-Favorite Alice In Chains song?
BQ2-Favorite musician who was addicted to drugs but is clean now?
BQ3-Do you consider Alice In Chains grunge or metal?
BQ4-What do you think of Alice In Chains continuing on without Layne?
